This is Why Porn is Good... And Bad

As you may have guessed from the very obvious title of this post, today’s topic of discussion is:

Pornography.

Now all of us are familiar with the term, and most, if not all of us here have watched porn in our lives. Today, the adult film industry is bigger than ever, making over $12 billion in the U.S.A. alone. Some say it might even be bigger than companies like Netflix. But this wasn’t always the case. There was a time when people had to plan watching porn. About 20 years ago, if you wanted to watch porn, you had you to go to a video rental store, rent porn, show an ID, and then watch it on your television when nobody was home. Now, all you have to do is type Pornhub on Google you’ll have thousands of hours of material to keep you occupied.

Porn gets a bad rep in our society. Many people see it as “evil”

Almost everyone watches porn, but people still ostracize porn and pornstars. The industry doesn’t get the respect it deserves, and the society sees the people working in it as aliens. This issue, although not as prevalent as it was 10 years ago, still exists in our society.

So, I’d like to be the devil’s advocate and say- The benefits of pornography outweigh the harm.

For starters, pornography encourages masturbation. Now, before any of you get started with this argument, yes. Masturbation is crucial to good health, for all sexes. Things like NoFap do nothing to help you. If you don’t masturbate when your body tells you to, you’ll be sad, and have wet dreams. Masturbation doesn’t decrease muscle mass or reduce brain activity. These are baseless arguments made up by people to defend their flawed perspectives.

So, Pornography helps masturbation. And as an extension, it helps our overall health. And there’s the added benefit of being able to find out your kink and be more aware of different kinks and sexualities.

Porn also makes the world a safer place. Let me explain:

Imagine all the porn in the world suddenly vanishes. There are hundreds of thousands of people left without jobs, and billions of horny people left without an easy outlet to satiate their carnal desires. What happens next? Some people who were left without jobs start engaging in illegal activities to make ends meet. And some horny folks out there force people to have sex with them, aka rape.

Now, this is an exaggeration, but the argument stands. Porn and a healthy amount of masturbation help in keeping the horny crowd in check.

But, like the title suggests, it’s not all good, porn has some harmful effects too. The most obvious one is that it’s fake and addictive. That’s bad because it wires your brain to get hooked on fake sex that you will most likely not get in real life. You see perfect people with perfect bodies having sex on screen and you think that’s the normal sex. You start to believe what you see on screen is what real people do, but when you go out in the real world, you find out that the real world is different. As a result, people often lose self-esteem when their expectations are not met. Their unnatural expectations are crushed, which leads to disappointment and relationship trouble.
Some people say porn also encourages violence.

And that’s about it for the drawbacks of porn. There’s no “porn addiction”
Addiction to masturbation and pornography is not a real thing. To be a clinical addiction, it has to have a physical effect on your body that harms it in certain ways and you should experience withdrawal symptoms. None of that happens with porn. So the next time you see a YouTube video titled “Get rid of porn addiction” understand that it is clickbait.

In conclusion, Porn is all good things in life. Too much of it is bad. But it also plays an important role in reducing the social stigma attached to sex and masturbation and helps us understand our kinks and other sexualities better.

Lying Makes Us Truthful

We have something called the herd-mentality, which essentially means that we like social things. We like staying together, doing things with others of our kind, and finding happiness in the existence of other people with us. For as long as we have existed, we have been this way. Humans started off as hunter-gatherers because it ensured the survival of our race back then. As we progressed through time, this trait of being together and being happy was imbued into us. When we find our people, we are happy. We do things with them and find happiness in doing so. If our people see us as the odd one out, or they see us as a threat, we lose their validation, and our brain screams "existential threat" When our actions or who we are, fails to be validated by those we consider to be a part of our creed, i.e. humans, we desperately look for ways to win back their favor. One of those ways happens to be lying. Lying is basically withholding information, or telling something that is made up...

Motivation Much?

We often bank on being motivated to get something done, and the inadequacy of it poses us with a scenario where we have work that we need to do, but do not. Now, as is customary with this blog, I would like to bring another perspective to the table: Motivation is never the problem. Once I have explained myself, it will appear to be painfully evident, and yet something elusive to most of us. Let me paint a picture: You are a student. You have a deadline for an assignment coming up in a few weeks, and you have done no work on it. You know that to avoid the sleepless nights of excruciating hardship, you must start now. And yet, something keeps you from doing so. Instead of working on it, you make yourself believe that there is time and you will get it done. With that belief, you go out with your friends to the bar or spend the night at your girlfriend’s place. You get to the assignment, but you only do so when you are forced to face the music and you have no other o...

Not Everyone Deserves to be Happy.

Do you know what the most ancient piece of storytelling is?  It is a poem from ancient Mesopotamia called the ‘Epic of Gilgamesh’ It tells the story of a king, who despite being a demigod, struggled his entire life to find meaning in his existence. And when his end came, he realized it was nothing but an endless march towards a tomorrow that never actually showed up. Now more than ever, equal rights, equal opportunities, mental well-being, and fulfillment in one’s personal and professional life are crucial to the livelihood of humans. And while an otherwise beautiful thing, it is also a joyful way of journeying on a path towards something grim. The premise of today’s discussion: Not everyone deserves to be happy.  This may seem like a blasphemous thing to say, wishing evil for your fellow man, but deep down, we all know this argument has some merit. Look at something very banal: Everyone in this world leads different lives, we do, feel and experience things differently; we acc...
